For many of us, the pandemic has forced most of us to be housebound for the last 10 months. Our homes are being put to good use! Stoves, computers, microwaves, air conditioners, and heaters are just some of the major appliances and products that have been put to the test. Because of this, home electricity use has increased significantly. Has your energy bill increased? Are you looking for ways to cut energy costs and save money? Here are some suggestions on how to do that.
#1: Minimize your heating costs.
Minnesota winters are brutally cold. You’ll need to use your heater, there’s no getting around that. But instead of cranking the temperature up to sauna levels, consider layering up your clothing instead. If you’re working remotely, you don’t need to keep your home at the same temperature as your office. Wear a sweater and shirt, wrap yourself in blankets, and wear two pairs of socks! Being aware of how much heat you use can take a big chunk out of your energy costs.
#2: Turn off what you’re not using.
This is a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget about. If you leave a room, turn off the lights. Unplug devices that you’re not using for prolonged periods of time. And if you decide to leave your home for an extended period, turn the temperature down.
#3: Install a programmable thermostat.
Programmable thermostats work in tandem with your heating system. Simply customize the temperature to be exactly how you want it. The thermostat will adjust automatically so you don’t have to worry about it. For example, program it to turn the temperature down while you’re away during the day, then program it to come up a few degrees warmer before you get home. That way, you’re not wasting energy on warming a space that you’re not in, and you’ll use only what you need. These are an affordable way to save energy and money!
Our team at Metro Air Heating and Cooling will gladly answer questions you have about installing a new energy-efficient system or a new programmable thermostat! Maybe you simply need a tune-up on your existing system to ensure it’s running as energy efficiently as possible. Contact us today for information.
