How Do You Know When You Need to Change Your Air Filter?

Written by: Metro Air

During the winter, your heating system is working hard to keep you comfortable. If you focus on taking good care of it, you will ensure that it has a long life and operates resourcefully without wasting a lot of extra energy. You’ll not only stay comfortable, but you’ll save money on your heating bill with an efficient furnace. Your air filters play a big part in how efficiently your system runs.

Why should you change your air filters?
If you don’t regularly change your air filters, the system will have to work harder and if this goes on for an extended period of time, it will become less efficient. Air flow will slow down and it will take a longer time to heat up your home. This translates to wasted energy and likely, a bigger utility bill each month. In addition, your air filters help trap debris, dust, and other harmful contaminants in the air that you breathe. If you’re not keeping it cleaned, the air inside your home could be damaging to you and your family.

How do you know when it’s time to change an air filter?
Generally speaking, your filters should be changed every one or two months. If you have filters that are washable, simply remove them and wash them with hot, soapy water. Let them dry and replace it – it’s that easy! If you notice a musty smell that is coming from the system when you use it or if you’re notice a lot of allergy symptoms when the HVAC system is turned on, it could mean that the filter is dirty and needs a replacement or cleaning. Keep in mind that if you have dogs or cats, be even more mindful of keeping the filters changed, as the dander and hair could cause the filters to build-up or clog. This could be very damaging to the system.

If you’re not sure how to change/clean the filter and want us to take a look, give us a call! We can come out for a preventative service appointment and clean/replace filters in addition to checking out the rest of the system to make sure everything is in great working order.
