How to Prepare Your Home for Cold Weather

Written by: Metro Air

The cold weather is coming. Now is time to start thinking about getting your home prepared for the dropping temperatures. Here are some things to prioritize when it comes to getting your home ready for the cold snap.

Tip #1: Make sure your thermostat is operating well.
Is your thermostat old? Now is a great time to upgrade to a new programmable thermostat. These regulate temperatures day and night in your home, whether you’re there or not. Simply set your desired temperature based on your schedule. Then, sit back and let it do the rest of the work. Example: are you away during the day? There’s no need to keep the house heated at full temperature. Program the thermostat to turn down a bit while you’re away, then set it to turn back up before you get home. Programmable thermostats can help save the average household up to 20% each year in heating/cooling costs.

Tip #2: Check your smoke detectors and install a carbon monoxide detector.
The change of season is the perfect time to check batteries in your smoke detectors and install carbon monoxide detector if you don’t have one. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer and an alarm detects any unhealthy levels of the gas in your home. This gas can leak from your heating system if it’s not taken care of. So, be sure to have it professionally inspected. This ensures that there are no mechanical breakdowns that cause carbon monoxide to get into the air you breathe.

Tip #3: Get your furnace professionally tuned-up.
Just like a car needs regular oil changes, so does your furnace need tune-ups! Professional maintenance on your heating system allows your system to operate with greater efficiency.  This saves money each month on utility bills. Keep maintained well so it lasts longer. Unfortunately, we see a lot of systems that have not been taken care of that require expensive repairs or sometimes full replacements. Don’t neglect basic maintenance. Schedule your appointment so you can rely on your system during the coldest fall and winter days.
