Weather is still bitterly cold in our area and ice and snow events are not over yet. With continued cold weather, it’s important to know how to keep your heating system protected from ice and snow. Here are some beneficial tips.
#1: Keep debris cleared.
Your outside heating unit should always be clear of debris, especially when the weather gets extreme! There should always be a two-foot clearance around the unit, including the top portion. Never use sharp objects to clear away ice or snow that has accrued around or on the unit, because this could damage the unit. Also, don’t store things on top of the unit as this could be a hazard.
#2: Make sure pipes are protected.
If there any tubes or pipes that are coming out of the unit and are left exposed, make sure they’re covered and insulated. Pipes can easily burst and break during freezing temperatures and it’s important that they are sheltered and kept safe in the event of ice and snow.
#3: Keep trees pruned.
If your heating unit is surrounded by trees, make sure you stay on top of regular tree pruning. If ice and snow build up on the trees and weak tree limbs fall on top of the unit, this could cause expensive damage to the heat pump or furnace.
#4: Get your preventative maintenance appointment set up.
Having our team of professionals at Metro Air Heating and Cooling come out and work on your system regularly is key to maintaining the life of your furnace system. It will also ensure that if there are hidden problems, they can be fixed before they cause a full system breakdown. During a preventative maintenance appointment, our technicians will clean and/or replace air filters, clean the blower motor, replace or repair any parts that are causing issues, and check for any other undiagnosed problems. We will make sure the machine is working at maximum efficiency, so you aren’t surprised with a high utility bill or an expensive repair when you least expect it!
