Important Gas Furnace Safety Tips

Written by: Metro Air

Gas furnaces are one of the most common types of heating systems found in homes around the United States. These reliable, energy-efficient machines keep families and individuals warm during the coldest of winters. As with any large heating unit or other appliance in your home, there are some important safety tips that you should know about when it comes to operating and maintaining your gas furnace.

Tip #1: Be sure that vent pipes are always free and clear and do not have anything touching them. Don’t stack anything near the vents, like boxes, as this can be a dangerous fire hazard! These pipes will get hot and could cause a fire if items are touching them or are too close.

Tip #2: Be sure your carbon monoxide detector is working well throughout the year and has not expired. Generally speaking, carbon monoxide detectors can last from about two years up to seven years. Even if it’s still working after its expiration date, you should have it replaced right away in order to keep you and your family protected. Carbon monoxide detectors have specific instructions on where they should be installed, including at what height they need to be placed, so be sure to read closely.

Tip #3: Clean and/or replace your gas furnace filters regularly. Clean filters will not only help your unit run more efficiently, but it will also provide cleaner air to circulate through the vents in your home. This means you’re breathing cleaner, healthier air, rather than air that’s littered with contaminants, dust, or other harmful pollutants.

Tip #4:  Inside your home, be sure that your air vents – both supply and return – are clear with no obstructions. Vents that are blocked could not only cause uneven temperatures in your home, but they also cause your system to work harder, which over time, could reduce the lifespan of the unit.
